Expectation

The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe was unexpected book club reading assignment. When I realized there is one other book that can be read before it I decided to give it a try in two for one deal. I remeber the old BBC tv show I’ve watched and remeber the movies being a part of Christmas programe before Harry Potter took off. I never realy had the chance to read these books so I was happy for the opportunity. I went in both books without any expectations.

Summary

I was glad for picking up The Magician’s Nephew as a first book as it gave me information that made the whole series a lot more interesting to read about. I did find some discrepancies between the books but did not let that spoil my enjoyment. There were some very interesting details in the The Magician’s Nephew that helped me better understand The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. It is beyond doubt a book meant for children but it still had some hold for me as a grownup reader.

It turns out we had a very good time at our book club meeting and The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe had much to give to bring out our festive mood. As a group some did not understand it and some did not like the sparse writting style meant to cater to children readers. We went all in with the Christmas spirit and munchies. We brought out cooked wine and Rahar Lokum candy. We even brought in a little Christmas tree with the lights and all just for the occasion. There were gifts of sweets and bookmarkers for everyone and we had fun.

Conclusion

Even with the writting style as it is I enjoyed both books and came to appreciate the depth that is hidden in the world of Narnia. Usually I have some reservations with novles that tend to bring out religious motives. In this instance I had no problems with that and everything went smoothly. I am curious on continuing the series with the rest of the books some time next year. I loved Ben Barnes as Prince Caspian and that gives me extra incentive for reading!

Sweet Ruin – Book Review

Sweet-Ruin-1

Finished reading

Sweet Ruin

(Immortals After Dark, #16)

by Kresley Cole

★★★★

Expectation

As I have already mentioned my motivation while buying this book was largely due too being a long time fan of the series. This book is one of the more recent additions to my collection from this summer. I actually started reading it only because I am really looking forward to the book Shadow’s Seduction that is the next one in the Immortals After Dark book series. I had no particular expectations and I really wanted to be done with it so I could continue with the Shadow’s Seduction and the second book from the Dacian storyline.

Summary

Again I feel compelled to clarify a bit on the progress of the book series I am reading. Immortals After Dark started out back in 2006. with a first book A Hunger Like No Other. I am very glad that it was not the first book from the series I’ve read since I did not think that much of it after did read it. For me the first was actually a prequel story Warlord Wants Forever. I still find it that it perfectly summarises the tone and the theme of the whole book series. And the premise which is neatly tucked in packages of steamy and fantastical books with highly eroticized characters is strong and simple:

There is someone for everyone

Trought the books in this series a long line of fantastical characters  of all kinds come to life. And for all of them there is that special someone who is made to be their other half. There is something endearingly comforting in this underlying theme of each of seventeen books so far. The characters and the mythology of the worlds that these characters come from is rich and impressive. While most of the creatures have some root in known myths some are more original than others. At the begining of each book there are few quotes from the “Book of Lore” and they are usually a little snippets that provide information on the type of characters that will be focused on in the book ahead.

While I have some characters that I love more than others most of the characters and their love stories have some part to play in the bigger background plot that spans trough each book and builds on the mythos of the Immortals After Dark universe. Some books end on a cliffhanger and some provide a bit more subtle transition from one pair of characters to the next.

IAD-puzzlePuzzle is not made by me!

The steamy scenes of all pairings are definitely mature in content and the amount of swear words trough the books is high. Some scenes are downright porn. Yet with all things considered there is something lovable about these books. I enjoy the badass female characters that are fearless and downright unstoppable when it matters the most. Humor is tinged with sarcasm and action is out of this  literally world.

Conclusion

I was pleasantly surprised by this book. When I started reading it I did not care much for the characters but by the end of the book I grew fond of the main characters. The story was filled with sexual tension. There were some crude moments in there but it all fit quite nicely. The story added to the backstory of the series and it was interesting to read the scenes from different perspectives. I love how intricately the characters grow trough the books and enjoy when they reappear from book to book.

Reading in progress December 2017

Lifestyle-Blog_CozyWarm-1030x582This December I’m counting down how many books I’m behind on my reading goals for GR and how did I do for this year in general. I’m barely half trough my reading goal and I’ve made my peace with the fact that I will not complete my GR reading goal. This year was not a good reading year for me. Some big changes happened and I had trouble copping. Out of 100 book goal I read only 52 so far. For now I’m making myself busy with reading more books at the same time this December.

Here are the books I am reading at the moment:

Sweet-Ruin-1

Sweet Ruin (Immortals After Dark, #16) by Kresley Cole

This book is one of the more recent additions to my collection from this summer. I actually started reading it only because I am really looking forward to the book Shadow’s Seduction that is the next one in the Immortals After Dark book series. I’m halfway trough and I did not expect to enjoy it this much. There are some cringe worthy phrasing but I’m having fun reading this book and that is all that matters for me right now. Hopefully I will make a book review on this one soon.

Kings Rising (Captive Prince, #3) by C.S. Pacat

Not that long ago I’ve devoured the first two books of this trilogy. I had some problems getting the third book. I went trough first two books at a fast pace and now I had some trouble getting into the third book. I’m halfway trough and this is a very suspenseful book.

A Man for Himself: An Inquiry into the Psychology of Ethics by Erich Fromm

I’m taking my time with this book. It takes concentration and I’m trying to savor some thoughts while I evaluate the meaning they carry. So far most of this book can be used as motivational/demotivational quotes one can find across the Internet. Contempalting and meditating required.

The Golden Compass (His Dark Materials, #1) by Philip Pullman

This month’s TBR Draw has been on my reading list for a few years now. I put it on the pile with the other books I’m reading this month but have barely openned it so far. I’m kinda apprehensive about starting this book since I will probably want to finish off the whole trilogy right away.

Aside from the books above that I’ve already started here are some books I’m planning to squeeze in my reading this December as well:

lionWitchWardrobe

The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe (The Chronicles of Narnia (Publication Order) #1) by C.S. Lewis

This is actually one of the books for my book club! I’m looking forward to it and at the same time I’m thinking about how could I add other books from the series to my TBR. I just hope mix the movies or the TV series with the books too much…

Shadow’s Seduction (Immortals After Dark, #17; The Dacians, #2) by Kresley Cole

While I did not expect to enjoy Sweet Ruin as much as I’m hoping to enjoy this one I really want to read Shadow’s Seduction by the end of the year! Immortals After Dark book series brings me joy and I love reading this series. The reason I’m soo looking forward to this books is  that one of my favorite characters of all time is in it!

Norse Mythology by Neil Gaiman

This is the last book I’ve bought! I waited for the super fancy Croatian edition to come out. Croatian edition one the right in the picture glows in the dark and has a custom box. This edition is the first book from a new publisher and they are trying to set some new standards in the publishing industry by creating a really beautiful book editions. Every book is numbered and they are published in a limited quantity. This book is like a delicate piece of art to be enjoyed on more than one level!

The Ship of the Dead (Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard #3) by Rick Riordan

This book goes in hand with Norse Mythology. I’m not sure if this series is meant to be just a trilogy and if that is so this could be the last book! I’ve loved Magnus since his first book and hope to read more books about him.

The Dark Prophecy (The Trials of Apollo #2) by Rick Riordan

Thematicaly I wish to finish this years reading in fun and adventure. While not so high on my reading list by the end of the year; this book will be a perfect fit for my reading repertoire. Festus and Leo making an appearance is an added bonus!
