Book a Day I read because of my reading club – August 2018
Norwegian Wood by by Haruki Murakami was a book we picked out for our book club meeting in November 2015. I was pleased with this pick since back then I was relatively new to the book club and was more than happy to try out some of the worlds most renowned authors.
Needless to say this was my first book by a Japanese author as well. The simple melancholy setting was at first confusing and it took me by surprise. I don’t think I was ready for the slow pace of the book that made the reader think along with the main character. Some phrases were rather profound and required longer contemplation.
At the time I was on my reading spree and could not really appreciate a book that needs time for contemplation. With the exception of few short remarks on melancholy and thought inspiring quotes I did not make any other notes or reviews. Only years later after my trip to Tokyo, Japan and seeing the Japanese culture up close I am able to appreciate the wordsmithing and the setting of the book.
