Book a Day – Tess of the D’Urbervilles

Book a Day I read because of my reading club – August 2018

Tess of the D’Urbervilles by Thomas Hardy was a book one of my dear friend readers wanted to push trough as a book club reading for quite a while. Tess was on her reading list and she thought it was great for book club. She finally succeeded in February 2017.

Readers of the book club did not enjoy this book very much. Some of them did not finish it and some decided to give up on it completely. My masochistic side reared its ugly head and I not only bought the book – but also pushed myself to read it whole. It was quite disturbing to read. For a while I thought it was gonna reflect on and spoil all the historical romance genre books I sometimes read.

I bought an Oxford classic edition with more than 50 pages of introductions which I just had to read before starting on the real thing. I think those softened me up a bit. My comments after finishing the book were mostly like:

So disturbingly wrong on so many levels. Disliked it so bad that I think it scarred me for all HR novels I might read in the future. This one reads like a snuff film…
