After the disappearance…

Having a job that is mentally challenging consumed all the time and energy that I used to spend on reading and creative projects. I decided to try getting back after a long period of hiatus.

I have a lot of work to do with clearing out my reading lists. I’ve reached a point where I don’t even remember what books I started reading or what they are all about! So sure, with some I have the bookmarks and the number of the page I last opened but all this has kept me wondering that maybe it’s time for a clean slate.

I stopped with the reading altogether when reading started to feel like running with no end in sight. I was left with anything else being a more appealing option than reading a book. And that is simply sad since all I need to do is turn around the room and I can see books that I was happy and dancing with joy at the thought of reading them when I got them. That desire is still there.

So what went wrong?

49256032_1909741852487906_3146241282951610368_n

One major thing I decided to do this year is to stop trying to finish the books that make me feel bad in any way. Keeping to reading a book that is not sitting well with me out of some silly notion that I must not quit is doing me some serious harm.

I get very emotional in my reading and while some stories inspire me; some others just drag me down and make me emotionally depleted. I had no will to read, no books to write about and no energy to create content or even talk about books in general.

turn-the-page

Before I can decide to focus on all the books I love I need to do some clearing of the books I’m stuck on.

Last four books I’ve kept on my Currently reading shelf on Goodreads without making any progress for months on are:

kundera_the-joke-fcx-700px

The Joke by Milan Kundera

There is nothing funny about this book. Especially if you ever lived in a country where telling a bad joke to a wrong person can get you incarcerated. I remember watching a movie based on one of other Milan Kundera’s works The Unbearable Lightness of Being. All I remember of it is the unbearably anemic scenography and a boring plot. This was one of the last books I picked up for my reading club in August last year I think. And it was the last one since then because I went on a hiatus form the book club as well. I’m well over two thirds in and I just cant stand the characters or the themes in the book. I’m officially putting and end to it and letting it go.

Man for Himself: An Inquiry into the Psychology of Ethics

by Erich Fromm

This one has gone on for well over a year. Truth be told I can’t even remember the last time I picked it up. This one might stay since the problem was not in the reading experience. The problem is being concentrated and having the time to read it without rush. If I’m willing to make changes to my reading in general then this might prove to be a rewarding experience in the end. I must make a triage of the books I like the thought of reading and the books I actually want to read. This one is somewhere in the middle.

Serpent’s Kiss (Elder Races #2) by Thea Harrison

I generally like the UF genre but this book is going back to the shelf. While I liked the first book of the series and the writing style in general the characters in this one have left me disinterested. I might go back to it in some other time in my life.

The All Souls Complete Trilogy:

A Discovery of Witches is only the beginning of the story

(All Souls Trilogy #1-3) by Deborah Harkness

I have so many great books I’m looking forward to on my shelves and after I watched the first season of the series I had to read this one again just to compare it to the show. While i liked the first book of the trilogy I never picked up the other two. After getting a Kindle for present and having issues with buying the translated edition I wanted I got this trilogy as a bundle combo on Kindle. This is the only book of all those above I’m actually reading. i’m reading it before bedtime sometimes when I can’t fall asleep and I’m taking my damn time with it.

Bible-Reading-Your-PlanPace-540x330

I realized that I need to be honest with myself about my reading needs and interests. Conserving my emotional and creative energy takes precedence over finishing a book that makes me struggle and brings me no joy. This does not mean I will give up on books as soon as I have problems with it. It means I will consider my issues with the book in question more seriously and not pin it on the quitting shame.

I do this in hope to have more exciting reading moments in 2019.

Happy New Year in reading and all the best!

Reading in Progress – June 2018

1

Lately I feel like a helium balloon barely tethered to the ground. Life is moving much faster than I’m used to. New job still takes some time to get used to and I even have a trip to Japan coming up soon!

While I was trying to catch up to some reading I managed to get started on quite a few different books. They are all in different states of unfinished reading. I’m going back to using my Reading in progress posts as a wall of shame for all the books I’m dragging along for months instead of finishing reading.

A Man for Himself: An Inquiry into the Psychology of Ethics by Erich Fromm

It took me ages to find the picture of this book in my media library. It has been almost a year since I borrowed it. I have neglected it badly!

How to Talk About Books You Haven’t Read by Pierre Bayard

This book caught my attention for obvious reasons. I’m actually thinking of suggesting it to my book club friends. I read trough the third of it but kinda stopped due to some other priorities and even had to pay library fine for it…

Serpent’s Kiss (Elder Races, #2) by Thea Harrison

I grabbed this book from the shelf when I wanted to read something urban fantasy style I like so much. It was supposed to be a respite from all those other books I’m catching up on for book club or other projects. After the initial two reading sessions it started to gather dust by the bed…

The Bridge on the Drina by Ivo Andrić

This is a book club reading assignment due in few days. The writing style is good but I have issues with the language and many words I’m not familiar with. My pace is slow even though I’ve given lots of attention to this book lately.

Even with all of those above being seriously neglected I have piled up few more books that I’m planing to add to the Reading in progress category. More on those in the next post!

Reading in progress February 2018

It has been a while since I was reading this many books at the same time. Reading more books at the same time was something I used to do a lot more while I was working in a bookstore. The frequency of the books I had on hand and information on them was higher and I was like a bee buzzing around with my nose in few different books a day even. Sometimes it all got too much and I had clearing phases to finish out the books I had dragged on for few months at a time.

This time I am in the middle of reading of five different books. Here are the books I am reading at the moment:

spin_prod_896834912

Fifty Shades Freed (Fifty Shades, #3) by E.L. James

I have been dragging this book out from the start of the year. It should be an easy read but I’m having trouble going trough it. I have passed 150 pages mark and hope it will go faster from now on…

Strange Candy by Laurell K. Hamilton

This book is my TBR Jar Draw for February. I picked it out since I miss reading about some of my favorite characters from Anita Blake universe. So far I have read first two stories out of fourteen in total. I like that each story has an introduction by author and I am making little notes for each story so I can post a short review on each.

Devil in Winter (The Wallflowers book 3) by Lisa Kleypas

I have managed to push trough this book for my book club reading at the beginning of March. It has been four years since the group picked out a romance book to read and I did a lot of work for it to pass as a reading suggestion. I am currently reading it for the fourth time and enjoying it immensely. I am also looking out for some book club fun ideas to make the meeting memorable for everyone. I have a tough crowd to please and I’m pulling out all the weapons I know! Oh and while I was meaning to buy the whole series in English one day my boyfriend bought a translated copy for me yesterday! English set is still on my wishlist though.

A Man for Himself: An Inquiry into the Psychology of Ethics by Erich Fromm

I have actually made progress with this book recently and I’ve passed the third of the book. I’m dealing with an older translated edition and some footnotes are giving me trouble. Reading this book takes all my concentration and sometimes I go back and reread some paragraphs. I’m taking notes as well and then look for English versions and it is all time consuming…

Lord of the Flies by William Golding

This book is another book club project and this one is due in a week and a half. I was looking for a translated copy of this book but have been unsuccessful for now. While I still have some options for obtaining a copy I will try to avoid reading it in digital form and before bedtime since it kinda scares me….

confucius-quote-no-matter-how-busy-you-may-think-you-are-you-must-find-time-for-reading

Reading five books at the time is not even my personal best but I will try to keep things moving a bit more faster and finish all of these by the end of the shortest month of the year!

Reading in progress December 2017

Lifestyle-Blog_CozyWarm-1030x582This December I’m counting down how many books I’m behind on my reading goals for GR and how did I do for this year in general. I’m barely half trough my reading goal and I’ve made my peace with the fact that I will not complete my GR reading goal. This year was not a good reading year for me. Some big changes happened and I had trouble copping. Out of 100 book goal I read only 52 so far. For now I’m making myself busy with reading more books at the same time this December.

Here are the books I am reading at the moment:

Sweet-Ruin-1

Sweet Ruin (Immortals After Dark, #16) by Kresley Cole

This book is one of the more recent additions to my collection from this summer. I actually started reading it only because I am really looking forward to the book Shadow’s Seduction that is the next one in the Immortals After Dark book series. I’m halfway trough and I did not expect to enjoy it this much. There are some cringe worthy phrasing but I’m having fun reading this book and that is all that matters for me right now. Hopefully I will make a book review on this one soon.

kings-rising

Kings Rising (Captive Prince, #3) by C.S. Pacat

Not that long ago I’ve devoured the first two books of this trilogy. I had some problems getting the third book. I went trough first two books at a fast pace and now I had some trouble getting into the third book. I’m halfway trough and this is a very suspenseful book.

410iJzw2iZL._SX331_BO1,204,203,200_

A Man for Himself: An Inquiry into the Psychology of Ethics by Erich Fromm

I’m taking my time with this book. It takes concentration and I’m trying to savor some thoughts while I evaluate the meaning they carry. So far most of this book can be used as motivational/demotivational quotes one can find across the Internet. Contempalting and meditating required.

312407

The Golden Compass (His Dark Materials, #1) by Philip Pullman

This month’s TBR Draw has been on my reading list for a few years now. I put it on the pile with the other books I’m reading this month but have barely openned it so far. I’m kinda apprehensive about starting this book since I will probably want to finish off the whole trilogy right away.

Small pile of open books with red bookmark ribbon isolated on wh

Aside from the books above that I’ve already started here are some books I’m planning to squeeze in my reading this December as well:

lionWitchWardrobe

The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe (The Chronicles of Narnia (Publication Order) #1) by C.S. Lewis

This is actually one of the books for my book club! I’m looking forward to it and at the same time I’m thinking about how could I add other books from the series to my TBR. I just hope mix the movies or the TV series with the books too much…

29544429

Shadow’s Seduction (Immortals After Dark, #17; The Dacians, #2) by Kresley Cole

While I did not expect to enjoy Sweet Ruin as much as I’m hoping to enjoy this one I really want to read Shadow’s Seduction by the end of the year! Immortals After Dark book series brings me joy and I love reading this series. The reason I’m soo looking forward to this books is  that one of my favorite characters of all time is in it!

nordijska pano

Norse Mythology by Neil Gaiman

This is the last book I’ve bought! I waited for the super fancy Croatian edition to come out. Croatian edition one the right in the picture glows in the dark and has a custom box. This edition is the first book from a new publisher and they are trying to set some new standards in the publishing industry by creating a really beautiful book editions. Every book is numbered and they are published in a limited quantity. This book is like a delicate piece of art to be enjoyed on more than one level!

9780141342580

The Ship of the Dead (Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard #3) by Rick Riordan

This book goes in hand with Norse Mythology. I’m not sure if this series is meant to be just a trilogy and if that is so this could be the last book! I’ve loved Magnus since his first book and hope to read more books about him.

91T+2pLx-zL

The Dark Prophecy (The Trials of Apollo #2) by Rick Riordan

Thematicaly I wish to finish this years reading in fun and adventure. While not so high on my reading list by the end of the year; this book will be a perfect fit for my reading repertoire. Festus and Leo making an appearance is an added bonus!

Reading in progress – September 2017

shutterstock_56919703

This September I’m in the middle of reading more than a few books. I’m trying to motivate myself to read more often. Therefore I picked more books than usual. Here are the books I’m reading this September!

410iJzw2iZL._SX331_BO1,204,203,200_

A Man for Himself: An Inquiry into the Psychology of Ethics

by Erich Fromm

I’ve been looking for this book for a while now. After I tried the local library where the only copy could not be found I almost gave up on ever getting it. Fortunately, a friend that works in a high school library had a copy for me to borrow. I believe it will take me a bit longer to read this but I’m already happy about it!

manybloodyreturns

Many Bloody Returns

edited by Charlaine Harris and Toni L.P. Kelner

So far I’m progressing nicely with a few stories every day. I mostly like the stories and enjoy them. What made me love this collection from the start is a dedication at the beginning of the book. I will definitely post a review on all the stories and this collection!

Second Nature

by Alice Hoffman

This is actually a second reading for this book. I suggested it for my book club as November reading. I’m looking forward to the discussion. I wonder how will this book affect me the second time I read it. I have quite fond memories from the first time I read it. I cover of Croatian edition!

dorian-grey

The Picture of Dorian Gray

by Oscar Wilde

This is another second reading. First time I read it it was in high school. I remember liking it but not much anything else. This time it is also a reading assignment but for a book club in November. I wonder how this discussion will go.

a17

With the rainy weather my reading has turned somewhat more serious. I don’t remember the last time I was rereading two books at a time. Strangely I seem to have avoided all my book series as well! I will have to see how will this affect my reading for September and November.
