Reading Challenge update Monday

Last week I started and finished

The Ship of the Dead

(Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard book 3)

by Rick Riordan

I know it is supposed to be a trilogy but it did not feel like the end of the story! I loved some of the scenes and ideas. As usual this was an entertaining read and I had so much fun. This series does good in pointing out some cultural and religious issues that might be problematic to some and unknown to others. I was not happy with the finale. But i did get a little nudge to continue the The Trials of Apollo series due to some little hints and crossover from Percy and Annabeth in this book. I left it at The Dark Prophecy ( The Trials of Apollo book 2). I read the first book The Hidden Oracle (The Trials of Apollo book 1) a little over year and a half ago! Even though this third book of the trilogy did not end on a high note as I expected I still feel that Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard is my favorite of all the series and Magnus remains my favorite character. At times he played a dumb but well meaning blonde and he reminded me a bit of Usagi Tsukino from Sailor Moon!

Also there were some very memorable scenes that might inspire some fan fiction writers and might be even worth searching out on the darker recesses of the Internet.

Magnus has played pull the rope in Hotel Valhalla war games, only, the losing side got dragged trough melted chocolate. Magnus was on the losing side and was covered in chocolate sauce when this happened!

Alex was in his guy form when it happened and I know many a reader that will squeal at this part of the book. It is a lovely scene though. With Magnus totally oblivious to his own appeal. I searched for some fan made artwork of this but none I’ve found were satisfying with the amount of chocolate that was involved!

The very same day I wrote my last Reading Challenge update Monday the awaited Serpentine ( Anita Blake Vampire Hunter #26) by Laurell K. Hamilton came in the mail!

I’ve already half way in the book and I’m actually prolonging it to enjoy myself more. I remembered why I love reading this series and it will be a long time until the next book is out and even longer until I get to read it since I’m buying mass market paperback editions only.

As the Summer reading challenge goes I’m on my tenth book with only five left. This week I read one and a half of another book. I’m left with three books and two graphic novels to finish! I’m actually reluctant to read any of the graphic novels since I know I will not stop at reading only one. I have the whole Vampire Academy series at the ready on the shelf and I’m wondering will I be tempted to read it through as well?

Reading in progress February 2018

It has been a while since I was reading this many books at the same time. Reading more books at the same time was something I used to do a lot more while I was working in a bookstore. The frequency of the books I had on hand and information on them was higher and I was like a bee buzzing around with my nose in few different books a day even. Sometimes it all got too much and I had clearing phases to finish out the books I had dragged on for few months at a time.

This time I am in the middle of reading of five different books. Here are the books I am reading at the moment:

Fifty Shades Freed (Fifty Shades, #3) by E.L. James

I have been dragging this book out from the start of the year. It should be an easy read but I’m having trouble going trough it. I have passed 150 pages mark and hope it will go faster from now on…

Strange Candy by Laurell K. Hamilton

This book is my TBR Jar Draw for February. I picked it out since I miss reading about some of my favorite characters from Anita Blake universe. So far I have read first two stories out of fourteen in total. I like that each story has an introduction by author and I am making little notes for each story so I can post a short review on each.

Devil in Winter (The Wallflowers book 3) by Lisa Kleypas

I have managed to push trough this book for my book club reading at the beginning of March. It has been four years since the group picked out a romance book to read and I did a lot of work for it to pass as a reading suggestion. I am currently reading it for the fourth time and enjoying it immensely. I am also looking out for some book club fun ideas to make the meeting memorable for everyone. I have a tough crowd to please and I’m pulling out all the weapons I know! Oh and while I was meaning to buy the whole series in English one day my boyfriend bought a translated copy for me yesterday! English set is still on my wishlist though.

A Man for Himself: An Inquiry into the Psychology of Ethics by Erich Fromm

I have actually made progress with this book recently and I’ve passed the third of the book. I’m dealing with an older translated edition and some footnotes are giving me trouble. Reading this book takes all my concentration and sometimes I go back and reread some paragraphs. I’m taking notes as well and then look for English versions and it is all time consuming…

Lord of the Flies by William Golding

This book is another book club project and this one is due in a week and a half. I was looking for a translated copy of this book but have been unsuccessful for now. While I still have some options for obtaining a copy I will try to avoid reading it in digital form and before bedtime since it kinda scares me….

Reading five books at the time is not even my personal best but I will try to keep things moving a bit more faster and finish all of these by the end of the shortest month of the year!

Reading in progress December 2017

Lifestyle-Blog_CozyWarm-1030x582This December I’m counting down how many books I’m behind on my reading goals for GR and how did I do for this year in general. I’m barely half trough my reading goal and I’ve made my peace with the fact that I will not complete my GR reading goal. This year was not a good reading year for me. Some big changes happened and I had trouble copping. Out of 100 book goal I read only 52 so far. For now I’m making myself busy with reading more books at the same time this December.

Here are the books I am reading at the moment:

Sweet Ruin (Immortals After Dark, #16) by Kresley Cole

This book is one of the more recent additions to my collection from this summer. I actually started reading it only because I am really looking forward to the book Shadow’s Seduction that is the next one in the Immortals After Dark book series. I’m halfway trough and I did not expect to enjoy it this much. There are some cringe worthy phrasing but I’m having fun reading this book and that is all that matters for me right now. Hopefully I will make a book review on this one soon.

Kings Rising (Captive Prince, #3) by C.S. Pacat

Not that long ago I’ve devoured the first two books of this trilogy. I had some problems getting the third book. I went trough first two books at a fast pace and now I had some trouble getting into the third book. I’m halfway trough and this is a very suspenseful book.

A Man for Himself: An Inquiry into the Psychology of Ethics by Erich Fromm

I’m taking my time with this book. It takes concentration and I’m trying to savor some thoughts while I evaluate the meaning they carry. So far most of this book can be used as motivational/demotivational quotes one can find across the Internet. Contempalting and meditating required.

The Golden Compass (His Dark Materials, #1) by Philip Pullman

This month’s TBR Draw has been on my reading list for a few years now. I put it on the pile with the other books I’m reading this month but have barely openned it so far. I’m kinda apprehensive about starting this book since I will probably want to finish off the whole trilogy right away.

Small pile of open books with red bookmark ribbon isolated on wh

Aside from the books above that I’ve already started here are some books I’m planning to squeeze in my reading this December as well:

The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe (The Chronicles of Narnia (Publication Order) #1) by C.S. Lewis

This is actually one of the books for my book club! I’m looking forward to it and at the same time I’m thinking about how could I add other books from the series to my TBR. I just hope mix the movies or the TV series with the books too much…

Shadow’s Seduction (Immortals After Dark, #17; The Dacians, #2) by Kresley Cole

While I did not expect to enjoy Sweet Ruin as much as I’m hoping to enjoy this one I really want to read Shadow’s Seduction by the end of the year! Immortals After Dark book series brings me joy and I love reading this series. The reason I’m soo looking forward to this books is  that one of my favorite characters of all time is in it!

Norse Mythology by Neil Gaiman

This is the last book I’ve bought! I waited for the super fancy Croatian edition to come out. Croatian edition one the right in the picture glows in the dark and has a custom box. This edition is the first book from a new publisher and they are trying to set some new standards in the publishing industry by creating a really beautiful book editions. Every book is numbered and they are published in a limited quantity. This book is like a delicate piece of art to be enjoyed on more than one level!

The Ship of the Dead (Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard #3) by Rick Riordan

This book goes in hand with Norse Mythology. I’m not sure if this series is meant to be just a trilogy and if that is so this could be the last book! I’ve loved Magnus since his first book and hope to read more books about him.

The Dark Prophecy (The Trials of Apollo #2) by Rick Riordan

Thematicaly I wish to finish this years reading in fun and adventure. While not so high on my reading list by the end of the year; this book will be a perfect fit for my reading repertoire. Festus and Leo making an appearance is an added bonus!

Reading in progress November 2015

Since I can’t finish a month without having a few books that I’m in the middle of reading I decided to try to motivate myself to finish them by posting my progress. Some of these books I keep lugging behind for months and it is just embarrassing. I’m actually hoping for the shame factor to kick in and make me deal with this issue.

To make matters more official I will do one Reading in progress post at the start of each month just to put to light the books I’m having problems finishing and why.

Sometimes it is the lack of time and sometimes I just have problems with the topic of the book. I hope this will be a helpful reference to better choosing of books in the future.

For November I have three reading in progress books:

A Perfect Blood (The Hollows book 10) by Kim Harrison

12 out of 525 pages

This was supposed to be my Halloween read! I love this book series but somehow I got stuck with it for two months now. I didn’t even picked it up. I read the first chapter and that was it. I might as well start it over!

neuromancer (1)

Neuromancer (Sprawl Trilogy book 1) by William Gibson

0 out of 228 pages

This book is a part of a reading challenge I did for an activity in a group I’m in. The challenge expires by the end of the year but I’m prolonging this one for a few months now and I’m making zero progress. I started it few times and I just couldn’t focus and I’m in for another start from the beginning!

Contes de Grimm by Marc Girard

65 out of 165 pages

Granted this one is a bit more challenging read but I’ve been at it for longest from all of the above mentioned books. This barely 150+ pages is giving me more grief than I’m willing to admit.
