TBR Jar Draw May 2017

Spike: The Complete Series

(Angel: After the Fall)

by Brian Lynch, Nicola Zanni ★★

Finally finished last months TBR draw! Last time I opted to read two out of three but this time I managed to finish only this one. All in all I liked this graphic novel and reading about all of these familiar characters. When it comes to all things Whedonverse I am biased. I’m definitely a fan 🙂

I had some issues at first with dark artwork and when in doubt all I had to do is look at the cover and was hooked back in. The amount of familiar characters thrown into this story is staggering and made the story slightly unbalanced.

Contrary to some of the variant covers Angel and Illyra are NOT in this one. The female character Beck did not ring any bells which made me think about the huge time gaps between my reading trough Angel After The Fall graphic novel series.

The two draws I have not read are going back in the jar:

# Rosemary and Rue (October Daye #1) by Seanan McGuire

Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Vol. 1 (Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Season 1 #2-3)
by John Vornholt, Arthur Byron Cover, Alice Henderson, Joss Whedon (Creator)

My three new TBR Jar draws are as follows:

9780552572507

1 # The Crooked Sixpence (The Uncommoners #1) by Jennifer Bell, Karl James Mountford (Illustrator)

This was a gift I got somewhere last year from a work buddy. All I know is that it is fantastic novel for children. I thought the blurb on the cover to be interesting enough:

When their grandmother Sylvie is rushed to the hospital, Ivy Sparrow and her annoying big brother Seb cannot imagine what adventure lies in store. Soon their house is ransacked by unknown intruders, and a very strange policeman turns up on the scene, determined to apprehend them . . . with a toilet brush.

Kinda quirky and possibly entertaining read

2 # Angel Souls and Devil Hearts (Shadow Saga #2) by Christopher Golden

I read the first book from this series almost a decade ago. I thought it to be kinda dark and gritty. The horror elements freaked me out a bit. I liked the main character though. Picking up the second novel might be a bit of a challenge after all this time…

3 # Interview with the Vampire (The Vampire Chronicles #1) by Anne Rice

I have started reading this one for a few times now. I always get the book mixed up with the movie version since I watched the movie way to many times. I should probably make myself read trough this book already since it is such a prominent title in the urban fantasy genre and I have almost all of the books from the series anyway…

While my selection is a bit more challenging this time I know I will enjoy my reading no matter what I pick in the end!

Neglected May update

This May my reading and posting has been severely neglected. As it happens lots of things did not go as planned this May. What I did managed to do is read last month’s TBR Jar Draw.

The Undead Pool (The Hollows #12) by Kim Harrison ★★

I had such high hopes from this book and series in general. For some reason I had trouble keeping up with the plot and characters. While it started out awesome for some reason my inability to focus on the book and the long time it took me to read it trough made me not enjoy the book as much as I thought I would. The characters are still there and I like them. The romantic involvement of two main characters have had the desired squee effect on me. I’m honestly not sure what went wrong with the process of reading…

As soon as I finished The Undead Pool I jumped at the Devil in Spring (The Ravenels #3) by Lisa Kleypas. This historical romance proved to be funny and delight to read. I liked the quirky heroine but had to avoid any deeper contemplation upon reading the book. While parts of this book were unbelievably cliche, reading it have replenished some of my energy and I had a great time with this book. I’m very glad I’ve bought it and reading about older versions of Sebastian and Evie was nice.

Devil in Spring (The Ravenels, #3) by Lisa Kleypas ★★

For my TBR Jar Draw I picked out Spike: The Complete Series (Angel: After the Fall) by Brian Lynch, Nicola Zanni. For a while it was a close choice between it and the Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Vol. 1 (Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Season 1 #2-3) by John Vornholt, Arthur Byron Cover, Alice Henderson, Joss Whedon (Creator).

I’m still adjusting to wearing glasses. My eyes feel quite tired most of the time. The artwork in this graphic novel is proving to be a bit of a strain on my eyes and I’m forced to read  it during the day. Also I did not expect for it to be chunky and quite a bit heavy to hold while reading. I’m still intrigued by the cover and hope to get sucked into the story soon.

TBR Jar Draw April 2017

IMAG0404

Last month I started a little project I like to call TBR Jar Draw. I’ve listed my owned books I have not read yet and written their titles on little pieces of paper. They were all put into a little bluish jar. Each month I draw three titles from it and choose one I will be reading. Last month my three draws were:

1 # Fushigi Yûgi: Genbu Kaiden Vol. 01 by Yu Watase ★★

2 # The Undead Pool (The Hollows #12) by Kim Harrison

3 # The Hidden Oracle (The Trials of Apollo #1) by Rick Riordan

From the titles above I’ve finished the Fushigi Yûgi: Genbu Kaiden manga and I’m currently reading The Undead Pool. I said to pick one but since one was a manga AND I really liked the titles I’ve draw I decided to pick two instead!

While finishing Fushigi Yûgi: Genbu Kaiden Vol. 01 was bittersweet I was reminded how good it feels to read a good manga and how much I loved Fushigi Yûgi universe. What pained me is that I had only the first volume for reading and I’m still undecided about trying to collect the rest of the series or not. The Undead Pool I’m still reading each night before bedtime.

This March was a 20th Anniversary of Buffy the Vampire Slayer TV show. I’m still an avid fan of the show and I’m actually glad I got not one but two books related to it to read in April! I’m going to finish The Undead Pool before I decide my pick for April. I’m leaning towards one of the two Buffy themed books. Depending on how long it takes me I might decide to read both!
